COBI D-Day 6 Jun 1944 Set 2058

COBI's D-Day 6 Jun 1944 set is built from 33 blocks and contains three figures, each representing a different way of arriving in Normandy: a sailor from a landing craft, a paratrooper of the 101st Airborne Division, and an infantryman of the 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One. Accessories include a grenade, an M1 carbine, binoculars, an M1 bazooka and an M1 Garand rifle. All uniforms are printed.

Three men, three ways in

The choice of figures is the interesting part. The Normandy landings were not one operation but three overlapping ones, and each of these men experienced a different morning.

The paratroopers went first, dropped in darkness hours before dawn, scattered far from their drop zones by cloud and flak. Many spent the night alone or in improvised groups, fighting with whoever they found.

The infantry came by sea at first light, into the worst of it. The 1st Infantry Division landed at Omaha, where the assault came closest to failing.

And the sailor is the one people forget. Landing craft crews made the run to the beach repeatedly, unarmoured, under fire, all day — and then went back out for the next load.
