COBI Captain Edward Smith Figure Keyring Set 1358
A COBI minifigure of Captain Edward John Smith in printed White Star Line uniform, fixed to a matching brick with a metal chain and keyring. The connection points are glued so it survives daily use.
It was meant to be his last voyage
Edward Smith was 62 and the most senior captain in the White Star Line, trusted enough that wealthy passengers booked crossings specifically because he was in command. He had announced that the Titanic's maiden voyage would be his final one before retirement.
He had said, some years earlier, that he could not imagine any condition that would cause a modern vessel to founder, and that he had never been in an accident worth speaking about.
On the night of 14 April 1912 he was on the bridge within moments of the collision and spent the remaining two and a half hours organising the evacuation. Accounts of his last minutes differ and none can be verified. His body was never recovered.
In the COBI range
One of a series of sixteen figure keyrings from the Historical Collection. Set 1373 is the retail display holding the full assortment. COBI makes the Titanic herself as set 1916.
