COBI's Audi quattro in red is a 1:35 model built from 79 blocks under official Audi licence, 12.5 cm long, with the flared arches of the original reproduced. A sticker sheet is included.

The idea came from an army jeep

In the winter of 1976, Audi was testing cars in northern Scandinavia. Among the support vehicles was a Volkswagen Iltis β€” a slow, crude, four-wheel-drive military runabout built for the Bundeswehr.

An Audi chassis engineer, JΓΆrg Bensinger, noticed that the Iltis could not be caught on snow and ice by any of the powerful Audi saloons he was there to develop. Not kept up with: could not be caught. The thing had a fraction of the power and was beating everything on the site.

He took the observation back to Ingolstadt and argued that four-wheel drive belonged in a road car, which at the time was close to an eccentric position β€” it was for tractors and the military, and everyone knew it was heavy, complicated and thirsty. The quattro was shown at Geneva in March 1980.

In the COBI range

Part of the 1:35 Audi collection. The same car is available in white as set 24665, and set 24666 is the Group 4 rally version with a podium diorama. The Sport quattro S1 E2 is set 24667.
