COBI 8.8 cm Flak 18 with Carriage Set 3140
COBI's 8.8 cm Flak 18 with Carriage is a 1:35 model built from 360 blocks, 22 cm long. The gun can be deployed on its cross-shaped mount or carried on the SonderanhΓ€nger 201 trailer, which couples to other 1:35 vehicles. The barrel elevates, the mount turns through 360 degrees, and the outriggers fold. Two Luftwaffe artillerymen with Kar98k rifles are included, one with interchangeable headgear, plus brick shells, an ammunition box and a collector's plaque. No stickers.
It was never meant to shoot at tanks
The 88 is an anti-aircraft gun. Everything about it β the high muzzle velocity, the long barrel, the fuse-setting gear, the 360-degree cruciform mount β exists to throw a shell to twenty thousand feet and hit something moving across the sky.
The anti-tank use was improvised. A gun built to reach an aircraft at altitude has a very flat trajectory at ground ranges, and gunners in Spain and then in France discovered that lowering the barrel turned it into the most effective tank killer on any battlefield. In 1940 it destroyed Char B1s and Matilda IIs that nothing else in the German inventory could touch; in the desert, 88s dug in behind a ridge accounted for British armour in numbers.
The cost was that it stood two metres tall on an open mount with a thin shield, and every crewman was exposed. An 88 that had been located did not usually survive being located.
