BlueBrixx's Castle Wartburg is a BlueBrixx-Pro model built from 3,167 blocks, measuring 41.6 Γ— 16.8 Γ— 16.2 cm assembled β€” 445 building steps across six sections, in four modular parts. Designed by Martin, released March 2022. No stickers; one printed part. Weight around 1.7 kg.

Ten weeks in a room at the top

In May 1521 Martin Luther had been declared an outlaw and could be killed by anyone without consequence. His protector, Frederick the Wise, had him staged-kidnapped on the road and hidden at the Wartburg under the name Junker JΓΆrg, in a small room in the bailiff's lodge.

He spent about ten months there, and in roughly eleven weeks of that he translated the entire New Testament from Greek into German.

The consequence was larger than the theology. Germany at the time had no single written language β€” a text from Cologne was hard going in Augsburg. Luther wrote in a middle-German that both north and south could read, it was printed in enormous numbers, and within a generation it had done more to standardise written German than any decree could. People who rejected everything else he said still learned to write from his Bible.

The room he worked in is still shown at the Wartburg, and visitors have been chipping souvenirs off the plaster for four hundred years.

The other story the castle carries

The Wartburg is also the supposed site of the SΓ€ngerkrieg, the medieval contest of minstrels that Wagner built TannhΓ€user around. Whether it happened is doubtful; that it is believed is what matters, and it is a large part of why the castle became a German national symbol in the nineteenth century.

Built around 1067, UNESCO World Heritage since 1999, and one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Germany.

In the BlueBrixx range

Set 103827 is Burg Eltz by the same designer β€” BlueBrixx places the Wartburg explicitly in that tradition, alongside its Neuschwanstein model. The three together make a set of German castles at a consistent scale and level of detail.
