BlueBrixx Star Trek Klingon D7 Class Battlecruiser Cloaked Set 104957

BlueBrixx's Star Trek Klingon D7 Class Battlecruiser (Cloaked) is an officially licensed BlueBrixx-Pro model built from 580 blocks, measuring 34.6 × 26.3 × 13.6 cm assembled. Built in translucent blue to represent the ship while cloaked, with movable wings. Licensed by CBS Studios, printed manual included. Age 8+.

The Klingons traded for the cloak

The translucent bricks are not a styling choice — they refer to a specific plot point that solved a specific production problem.

In the original series the Romulans had cloaking technology and the Klingons did not. Then an episode established that the two powers had entered into an alliance and exchanged hardware: the Romulans supplied cloaking devices, and the Klingons supplied ships.

The real reason was budget. The Romulan Bird-of-Prey model from the first season was expensive, and the production had a perfectly good Klingon D7 model sitting in the workshop. Rather than build a new Romulan ship, the writers explained why Romulans would be flying Klingon hulls — and a cost-saving measure became one of the more durable pieces of Star Trek politics.

Forty years of subsequent material took the alliance seriously, and it still turns up in novels, games and later series. Almost nobody watching knows it began with a model kit and an accountant.

The D7

The design is Matt Jefferies's, and it reads as a bird in flight: a bulbous command head, a long neck, and a broad hull with nacelles at the wingtips. It was the first Klingon ship ever seen on screen and it set the visual language for every Klingon vessel since — including the later, smaller ship that confusingly took the name Bird-of-Prey.
