Peanuts is full of sport because Schulz was

Charles Schulz was a serious athlete for most of his life, and it shows on every page of the strip.

He played ice hockey into his seventies. In 1969 he built a full-size rink in Santa Rosa, California, ran it as a public facility, and founded a senior hockey tournament there that is still played. He golfed, he played tennis and baseball, and he followed all of it closely.

That is why Peanuts has a baseball team that never wins, a football that is always pulled away, Snoopy playing hockey on a frozen birdbath, and skateboards, surfboards and tennis rackets appearing whenever a craze arrived. Schulz was not reaching for topical material — he was drawing what he did on weekends.

It is also why the sporting failure in the strip is so specific. The despair of a bad loss, the pitcher who blames himself, the rain that stops play — those are written by someone who has felt them rather than imagined them.

The backdrop does the work

Eighty-one pieces is very few for a scene. Putting the background on printed card means every brick goes into Snoopy and the board rather than into scenery, which is why the result reads as a place.
