Peanuts was mostly black and white

A rainbow Snoopy is a cheerful object and it is also, strictly, un-Peanuts.

The strip ran daily in newspapers for fifty years in black ink on grey paper. Only the Sunday page was in colour, and even then Charles Schulz drew it to work without — the colour was applied by the syndicate, from a limited printing palette, and Schulz had to assume many readers would see it in monochrome anyway.

That constraint shaped how the strip looks. Snoopy is white with black markings because that reads at any size in any printing quality. Charlie Brown's shirt is a zigzag rather than a pattern. The characters are built from lines that survive being reproduced badly on cheap paper at three centimetres across.

Colour arrived properly with the television specials from 1965, and it is the version most people under sixty picture. But the drawing that made Peanuts the most widely read comic strip in history was designed for newsprint, and it holds up because of it.

A picture that is 9 cm deep

This is a box rather than a flat panel — a frame with depth, so the subject sits inside it and casts a shadow. That is a different thing from a brick mosaic, and it is why it works hanging on a wall rather than leaning on a shelf.
