BlueBrixx's Snoopy Having a Picnic is an officially licensed Peanuts diorama built from 86 blocks, supplied with a printed cardboard backdrop that completes the park scene. Released April 2024.

The backdrop does the work

Eighty-six pieces is very few for a scene, and the printed card behind it is how the set gets away with that.

A brick diorama normally has to build its own context — trees, sky, ground — and that is where the piece count goes. Putting the background on a flat printed card means every one of the 86 bricks can go into Snoopy and the picnic itself, and the result reads as a complete scene rather than an object floating on a baseplate.

It is the same trick a theatre uses with a painted flat: build what is near, paint what is far, and let the eye do the rest. It is why this costs what it does instead of three times as much.

Snoopy is never doing what he appears to be doing

A picnic sounds like the least eventful thing in Peanuts, and it is exactly the kind of scene Charles Schulz built the strip on.

Very little happens in Peanuts. Nobody wins, the kite stays in the tree, the football is always pulled away. What the strip is actually about is small disappointments and small pleasures, drawn with a seriousness usually reserved for adults — which is why it ran for fifty years and why the quiet scenes are the characteristic ones.

A beagle eating a sandwich in a park is entirely in keeping.
