Peanuts is mostly about not being invited

A birthday party is a cheerful subject and it is also, in this particular strip, a loaded one.

Charles Schulz built a great deal of Peanuts around exclusion. Charlie Brown gets no Valentine cards while the whole class watches. He is not invited to the party. He is picked last, misses the kick, loses the game, and writes to a pen pal who does not reply. Schulz drew that for fifty years, and he was open about where it came from — he had been a shy, unathletic boy whose cartoons were rejected by his own high school yearbook.

Which is why Snoopy having a party matters. The dog is the one character in the strip who is never excluded from anything, because he does not notice that he might be. He throws his own parties, dances alone, and is entirely satisfied with the arrangement.

Put a small brick Snoopy at a birthday table and that is what you have on the shelf: the one member of the cast for whom the party always happens.
