Sixty-three pieces, and the shape is still right

A Stargate is a difficult thing to make small. It is a ring — and a ring built from rectangular bricks either looks like a ring or looks like a polygon, with very little in between.

At this size there is no room to cheat with curved parts or clever internal structure. The gate has to read as circular from a metre away using a few dozen elements, with the nine chevrons spaced correctly around it, or it does not work at all.

That is the whole design problem, and it is why a 63-piece set is worth looking at rather than dismissing. It is the same object as the large gate in set 108211, solved under a constraint that removes every easy answer.

What it is for

Ten minutes to build and about the size of a coffee mug. It sits on a desk, goes in a stocking, and costs less than a paperback — the smallest way into the Stargate line, and the one you buy two of.

Set 108211 is the full Stargate on Planet diorama with five SG-1 figures, 106842 the Gate Room, 106843 the F-302 and 106847 the Goa'uld Al'kesh.

Note that set 108210, also called SGC Stargate, is a different set number and a separate release rather than the same model.
