The first public sandpit was in Berlin
Sandpits are so ordinary that it is odd to think somebody had to invent them, and somebody did.
Heaps of sand β Sandberge β were placed in Berlin's public parks in the middle of the nineteenth century, partly as a play surface and partly on medical advice about children getting outdoors. A visiting American physician, Marie Zakrzewska, saw them and wrote about it.
In 1885 a charitable committee put three cartloads of sand in the yard of a mission on Parmenter Street in Boston. It was called the Sand Garden, and it is generally taken as the first playground in the United States. Within twenty years American cities had playground commissions and a national association.
So the modern playground begins with a pile of sand in a Berlin park, transplanted to a Boston slum by a doctor who thought children needed somewhere to be.
A small set for a small builder
Seventy-four pieces is perhaps fifteen minutes, which is the right length for a five-year-old building alone. It is also the cheapest way into the BlueBrixx Play town, and it connects to everything else in the range.
In the BlueBrixx range
Sets 107422 (Playground), 107420 (Flower Booth), 107418 (Picnic) and 107421 (Bakery) are the companion sets, all to the same scale.
