BlueBrixx's Pizza Restaurant and Delivery Scooter is a BlueBrixx Play set built from 619 blocks, measuring 25.5 × 14.4 × 12.3 cm assembled. The pizzeria has an oven, a service counter, a drink cooler and printed signage; the set also includes a delivery scooter. Four figures: a pizza maker, a rider and two customers. Delivery pizza is an American invention that had to be re-imported

Pizza is Neapolitan and pizza delivery is not. In Italy a pizza was — and in much of the country still is — something you eat where it is made, standing at a counter or sitting at a table, within about ninety seconds of it leaving the oven, because that is when it is any good.

Delivery was worked out in the United States after the war, by shops serving suburbs where nobody walked anywhere. The technology that made it possible is not the scooter — it is the box: corrugated card, ventilated so steam escapes rather than turning the base to paste, in a shape that stacks. Getting that right took decades, and the insulated bag came later still.

Italy then imported the idea back, slowly and with some resistance, and Neapolitan purists will still tell you that a delivered pizza is a different food. They are not entirely wrong, and several hundred million people a year have decided they do not mind.

What a shop adds to a brick town

A town made of houses is a residential estate. What makes it read as a place is the ground floor with something happening in it — a counter, a light on, somebody serving. This is one of the few BlueBrixx Play sets that supplies exactly that.
