Horses travel badly, and the trailer is built around why
A horse in a moving vehicle has three problems that a person does not.
It cannot vomit. The equine oesophagus has a one-way valve, so anything that upsets a horse's stomach has nowhere to go — which is one reason travel stress can turn into colic, and why long journeys are planned around rest and water rather than speed.
It balances by spreading its legs. A horse braces against acceleration and cornering by shifting its feet, and if the space is too narrow it cannot. That is why partitions in a transporter are set wider than the animal and why drivers are taught to brake and corner as gently as a full load of liquid would demand.
And it prefers to travel backwards. Studies of heart rate and balance have found horses facing rearwards are measurably less stressed and brace less — they can lean into braking rather than being thrown onto their forelegs. A number of designs now load them that way.
The ramp matters too. A horse will not walk up something it does not trust, and a steep or wobbling ramp turns a two-minute job into an hour.
