BlueBrixx's First Day at School is a BlueBrixx Play set built from 38 blocks β€” a child with a backpack and a school cone, a printed blackboard, and a brick camera to photograph the moment. All decoration is printed; no stickers. Released 2024.

The cone is a German custom worth explaining

The large decorated cone the child is holding is a SchultΓΌte, and outside German-speaking countries almost nobody knows what it is.

On the first day of school β€” the Einschulung β€” a German child is given a stiff paper cone, often as tall as they are, filled with sweets, small toys and school supplies. It is opened at home afterwards, and the photograph of the child holding it in front of the school is the standard family picture of that day, taken in essentially the same pose since the nineteenth century.

The custom appears in Saxony and Thuringia around 1810. The story told to children was that a ZuckertΓΌtenbaum β€” a sugar-cone tree β€” grew in the schoolmaster's garden, and when the cones were ripe it was time to start school. Parents were told when to collect theirs.

It survived two German states and reunification without interruption, and it is one of the few childhood rituals that is genuinely universal in Germany.

That is why this thirty-eight-piece set has a camera in it. The photograph is part of the custom.
