Everything about a hen house answers one instinct
A coop looks like a small shed with a door. Every feature in it is a response to something a chicken does without being taught.
The perch is high. Chickens roost off the ground at night because their ancestors slept in trees, and a hen with no raised perch will try to sleep somewhere unsuitable rather than on the floor. The perch must also be higher than the nest boxes, or they will sleep in the nests and foul the eggs.
The nest box is dark and low. A hen looking for somewhere to lay wants an enclosed, dim, private space β and if the coop does not provide one she will find her own, usually somewhere you cannot reach.
The pop-hole is small. Just big enough for a bird, because everything that eats chickens is larger.
Get those three right and hens use the coop as intended from the first evening. Get them wrong and you spend every night carrying birds indoors.
A small set for a small builder
Eighty-four pieces is perhaps fifteen minutes, and the removable roof means a child can reach in. The animals are the point at this size β a farm scene without livestock is a shed.
