COBI Battleship Tirpitz Set 4839

COBI's Tirpitz is a 1:300 model built from 2,810 blocks, 87 cm long, in her distinctive Norwegian camouflage. The propellers and rudders turn, the turrets rotate and the barrels elevate. A black display stand with two nameplates carrying the ship's data is included. Nothing needs gluing or painting.

The ship that won by existing

Tirpitz was the Bismarck's sister and the largest ship the Kriegsmarine ever put to sea. In a career of three years she sank no enemy warship and fired her main guns in anger essentially once, against an undefended weather station on Spitsbergen.

She was nonetheless one of the most effective ships of the war, because she spent it moored in a Norwegian fjord.

As long as she was afloat and within reach of the Arctic convoy route, the Royal Navy had to keep capital ships in northern waters to answer her if she sailed. Those ships could not be in the Mediterranean or the Pacific. In July 1942 the mere report that she had put to sea caused convoy PQ17 to be ordered to scatter; the escorts withdrew, and German aircraft and submarines destroyed most of the merchant ships one by one. Tirpitz never got near them.

Churchill called her simply the Beast. It took three years, dozens of attempts by aircraft, midget submarines and bombers, and finally 12,000-pound Tallboy bombs to sink her off Tromsø on 12 November 1944.
