COBI Battleship Gneisenau -Limited Edition Set 4834

COBI's Battleship Gneisenau Limited Edition is a 1:300 model built from 2,446 blocks, 81 cm long. The propellers and rudders turn, the turrets rotate and the barrels elevate. The limited edition adds an exclusive figure of Admiral Günther Lütjens with a brick table carrying a map of Operation Berlin, two laser-cut plates with an individual set number, and a paper certificate of authenticity bearing the same number and the signature of COBI's president. All markings are printed.

The admiral in this box died on the Bismarck

Günther Lütjens commanded Operation Berlin from the Gneisenau in early 1941 — two months in the Atlantic with the Scharnhorst, 22 merchant ships sunk or captured, and not a man lost.

Three months later he was aboard the Bismarck as fleet commander. After the Hood was destroyed he chose not to return to Norway but to run for France, and he was still aboard when the ship went down on 27 May 1941 with over 2,000 men. His body was never recovered.

The figure and the map in this set commemorate the operation he got right. He is remembered for the one he did not.

What "Limited Edition" means here

Worth being precise, because the term is used loosely. In COBI's case it means a numbered run: the two laser-cut metal plates and the certificate carry the same individual number as the box, and the Lütjens figure and map table are not sold in any other set.

If you buy one of these as a collector rather than a builder, the number and the certificate are the part that matters — which is also why a damaged box affects the value here in a way it does not on an ordinary set.
