Mould King's Art Gallery is built from 3,536 blocks into a three-storey gallery, each floor with its own theme and fitted interior. Three LED light strips and a battery box are included, and the strips route inside the walls so the wiring stays hidden. Colour-printed instructions.

Before you order: there is no outer box

This set is supplied without its retail carton. The parts, the light strips and the instructions are all there and complete — what is missing is the printed box they normally ship in.

For anyone building the model that changes nothing. For anyone collecting sealed sets it changes everything, and it is the reason for the price. Worth being clear about before rather than after.

Real galleries are dim on purpose

The lighting in this set is the feature Mould King sells it on, and lighting is the one thing a real gallery thinks hardest about.

Light destroys art. Ultraviolet and visible light both break down organic pigments and fibres, and the damage is cumulative and irreversible — a watercolour exposed to bright light for years does not recover when you dim the room. Museums therefore work to strict limits measured in lux: around 50 for works on paper, textiles and watercolours, up to 200 for oil paintings, and unlimited only for stone, metal and ceramics.

Fifty lux is about the brightness of a room lit by candles. That is why the drawings room in a major museum feels gloomy, and why it is the curator's decision rather than an economy.

The rest follows: light aimed at the work and not the visitor, UV filtered out, and rotation — a fragile piece shown for three months and then rested in the dark for years. A gallery's permanent collection is mostly not on display, and the reason is the light.

Three floors, three rooms

The layered design is what makes a 3,536-piece building work as a display: each floor is its own scene rather than a repetition, so there is something different to look at from every angle, and the LED strips light each level separately.
