One insert set is a functioning deck of playing cards
Double or Nothing is a 54-card insert set β fifty-two cards plus two jokers β printed on 12-point stock in the suits and ranks of an actual deck.
That number is the giveaway. Insert sets are normally sized to whatever the checklist needs: 20 cards, 30, 45. Fifty-four is not a card-collecting number; it is a playing-card number, and it means the set was designed to be completed and then used.
The name comes from AEW's annual Double or Nothing pay-per-view, held in Las Vegas, which is itself named after a gambling term. An insert set built as a poker deck is the joke followed through to its conclusion.
Five of these fall in every box, one of them a Gold parallel. Completing the deck takes roughly eleven boxes if the distribution cooperates, which it will not β which is the entire business model of insert sets, applied to something you could in principle deal a hand with.
All in the Family
The base set runs to 100 cards in four subsets: Wrestlers (1-70), Tag Teams (71-80), Crew (81-92), and a new subset for 2023, All in the Family (93-100), covering AEW performers who are related to each other.
Professional wrestling has more of those than any other sport, and it is not a coincidence. The business ran for a century on territories controlled by families, where a promoter's son learned the trade from the inside and inherited both the ring name and the audience's memory of his father. The result is a roster where a surprising proportion of the talent is somebody's child, sibling or spouse.
A subset built around that is a reasonable thing for a wrestling card set to do and a strange thing for any other sport.
Parallels and chase cards
The parallel structure is unusually deep: up to eleven parallels of the complete base set, and six more of the first 92 cards, including one-of-one Gold Auto parallels. Low-numbered memorabilia parallels of the first 92 exist, as do printing plates from the complete set β some of them autographed.
Every box contains an AEW Rampage parallel.
