Why every trading card is the same size

The pages in this album hold nine cards, in a three-by-three grid, and that layout is a consequence of a decision made in 1957.

Topps standardised its baseball cards at 2½ by 3½ inches that year. The reasoning was industrial rather than aesthetic: it was the largest card that could be cut efficiently from the printing sheets they were already using, and it fitted the gum packaging.

Everyone else followed, because a card that did not fit the racks and boxes the trade already owned was a card nobody could sell. Seventy years later, a Star Trek card printed in 2023 is the same size as a Mickey Mantle rookie, and the accessory industry — sleeves, pages, top-loaders, storage boxes, grading slabs — is built entirely around those dimensions.

Nine per page follows from the paper: three cards across and three down fit a standard sheet with a usable margin. It is why a binder page looks the way it does, and why an album designed for a specific set is really a normal binder with the right artwork on it.
