Young Guns are the reason people open Upper Deck Series 1. Every year since 1990, the rookie subset has been the most chased set of cards in hockey — and the 2011-12 class is a strong one: Gabriel Landeskog, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Sean Couturier, Adam Henrique, Brandon Saad, Ryan Johansen, Adam Larsson and Mika Zibanejad among them.

Each hobby box holds 24 packs of 8 cards. The base set runs to 200 regular cards plus 50 Young Guns.

Box break, on average:

• 4 UD Canvas cards — with a Canvas Young Gun roughly every other box

• 2 Hockey Heroes, this year celebrating the 1950s

The rarer material in the checklist: Signature Sensations at 1:288 packs, UD Game Patch numbered to 15, and the die-cut acetate Clear Cut cards — Honoured Members numbered to 100, Foundation to 25, Leaders to 10. Regular set parallels run as Exclusives numbered to 100 and Exclusives Spectrum to 10.

One detail worth noting: this release is redemption free. Nothing in the box depends on a programme that closed years ago — every card is a card.
