The season belonged, statistically, to Lionel Messi. On March 7, 2012, in the round of 16 against Bayer Leverkusen, he scored five goals in Barcelona's 7–1 win — the first player ever to score five in a single Champions League match. He finished the season with 14 goals in the competition, a record for one Champions League campaign at the time. Barcelona, the defending champions, still went out in the semi-finals to Chelsea, who went on to win the final against Bayern Munich on penalties.
