2010 Panini Adrenalyn XL FIFA World Cup South Africa Trading Card Game Display Box | 100 Packs | UK Edition | Factory Sealed

A sealed display box of 100 packets of Panini Adrenalyn XL, the official trading card game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, in the UK edition with special England cards. It was the first World Cup card series Panini released under the Adrenalyn XL name. The collection runs to 350 cards from 22 of the 32 World Cup teams: 250 base cards plus 25 each of Star Players, Goal Stoppers, Fans' Favourites and Champions, every card rated for attack and defence for use in the game.

The UK edition treats England differently from the rest of the world. Its 18 England cards show only the player's head, marked England Superstar, where the international edition uses action photos. The England checklist includes Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and David Beckham. Limited Edition cards were issued as well.

The cards were printed before a tournament that ended badly for the players on them. On June 27, 2010 in Bloemfontein, with England trailing Germany 2–1, Lampard's shot struck the underside of the bar and bounced clearly over the line, but the goal was not given. Germany won 4–1. The incident changed FIFA's position on the question, and goal-line technology was in use at the next World Cup, in Brazil in 2014 — a sealed sticker box from that tournament is also in our catalog, as is the Adrenalyn XL UEFA Champions League 2010/11 box in the UK edition that followed this set. Spain won this World Cup, the middle of three major titles in a row; sealed Panini boxes from Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, the first and last of them, are in the catalog as well.
