Five days

John Tavares was the first player the Ontario Hockey League ever granted exceptional player status. In May 2005 the league set aside its age rule for him, and the Oshawa Generals took him first overall at fourteen β€” the youngest player ever drafted into the OHL. Two seasons later, as a sixteen-year-old, he scored 72 goals and broke Wayne Gretzky's league record.

Then he waited. Tavares was born on 20 September 1990, five days after the NHL's eligibility cutoff of 15 September, which put him out of the 2008 draft and into 2009. An attempt to have the rule changed on his behalf went nowhere. The most discussed junior player in Canada spent two more seasons in the OHL while the players he had grown up against left for the NHL without him.

That is why his rookie card is in this set rather than the one before it. Steven Stamkos, born seven months earlier, went first overall in 2008 and has his Young Guns card in 2008/09 Series 1 β€” also listed in this shop. The same generation, two sets apart, separated by five days on a birth certificate.

What is in the box

The base set runs to 200 regular cards. Young Guns, the rookie subset Upper Deck has printed since 1990/91, falls at 1:4 packs, which is where the six per box come from. Behind Tavares the 2009 class holds Victor Hedman second overall, Matt Duchene third, and Evander Kane, Tyler Myers and Ryan O'Reilly further down. Erik Karlsson is here as well, though he belongs to the 2008 draft β€” he stayed in Sweden for a further season and reached the NHL a year later than his draft class. He has since won the Norris Trophy three times.

UD Game Jersey cards fall at 1:24 packs, which accounts for the single jersey card per box. The hobby version of this release holds two; pack count, card count and the six Young Guns are otherwise identical. The All-World Team insert runs at 1:13 with short prints at 1:120, and four superstar inserts β€” Draft Day Gems and Face of the Franchise at 1:12, Top Guns and Season Highlights at 1:24 β€” combine to roughly one card in every four packs.

In the range

Series 2 of the same season, listed separately here, carries the players called up later that year: Brad Marchand, Logan Couture and Michael Grabner. The 2009/10 MVP and Artifacts boxes cover the same rookie class in other formats, and the 2008/09 Series 1 retail box is the release immediately before this one.
