BlueBrixx's Star Trek Ferengi D'Kora Marauder is an officially licensed BlueBrixx-Pro model built from 207 blocks, measuring 14 Γ 11.2 Γ 8.6 cm assembled. Age 14+, with a printed instruction manual.
The Ferengi were supposed to be terrifying
When Star Trek: The Next Generation began in 1987, the Ferengi were introduced as the series' major new adversary β the replacement for the Klingons, who had become allies. The first-season episode that unveiled them was built entirely around that reveal.
It did not work. Audiences found them ridiculous rather than menacing: the crouching posture, the shrieking, the whips. Whatever the writers had intended, what appeared on screen could not carry a season as a threat.
Star Trek did something unusual in response. Rather than drop them, it changed what they were for. The Ferengi became a commercial civilisation β the Rules of Acquisition, the profit motive as religion β and turned into some of the franchise's best comic and, eventually, genuinely affecting characters. Quark on Deep Space Nine is a long way from what was planned in 1987.
And the villain slot they had failed to fill was given, two seasons later, to the Borg.
The ship
The D'Kora class is the vessel from that first appearance, and its design carries the same idea: a wide, flattened hull with a forward section that looks more like a trading vessel than a warship. It is armed and it is fast, but it does not announce itself the way a Klingon bird-of-prey does.
At 207 pieces this is a compact model β an evening's build rather than a project, and one of the more unusual shapes in a Star Trek collection.
In the BlueBrixx range
Set 105695 is the Jem'Hadar Battleship and 105696 the USS Equinox. Set 105418 is the Borg Drone Bust β the enemy the Ferengi were meant to be.
