HMS Belfast is a British Royal Navy light cruiser of World War II. She entered service on August 5, 1939. At the end of November of the same year, as a result of damage by a German mine, she was taken out of service for three years. From 1942, she provided cover for Arctic convoys. On December 26, 1943, together with the cruisers HMS Norfolk and HMS Sheffield, she repelled attacks by the German battleship Scharnhorst, which tried to break through to the Allied convoy. Stopping the Scharnhorst contributed to its subsequent entrapment and subsequent sinking. HMS Belfast also took part in the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. It had been undergoing a major overhaul since June 1944. In August 1945, she sailed into Sydney Harbor, where she was found by the end of the Pacific War. From 1945 to 1962, with breaks for repairs, she served in the Far East, taking part in the Korean War, among other things. In 1966 it was designated as a residential hulk. In 1971 it was in danger of being scrapped. Thanks to the active attitude of the British public, this did not happen. It was anchored on the Thames and became a museum unit. Subsequent refurbishments extend its life.
