A bomber that ended up fighting for someone else

The Łoś — Polish for elk — was among the most modern bombers in Europe when it entered service in 1938, and it drew strong export interest at the Belgrade and Paris air shows. On 1 September 1939 the Polish air force had about 86 of them, but fewer than half saw combat; the rest were with training units, in repair or held in reserve. Without fighter cover, the crews that did fly suffered heavy losses, and the last Polish missions were flown on 19 September.

Then the surviving aircraft took a strange turn. Around 26 or 27 were flown out to Romania as Poland fell. In October 1940 the Romanian government seized them, and 23 went into service with the Royal Romanian Air Force — including missions against the Soviet Union in 1941. Of more than 120 built, not a single original survives today.
