COBI German Tank Crew Set 2066

COBI's German Tank Crew set is built from 33 blocks and contains three figures of German armored troops for crewing COBI's Historical Collection tanks.

The beret that nobody liked

Before the war, German tank crews were issued a distinctive piece of headgear: the Schutzmütze, a padded crash helmet of felt or rubber sponge covered by an oversized black beret. It was meant to protect a man's head when a tank lurched across rough ground.

It proved impractical almost at once. Crews found it difficult to wear with the headphones that radio-equipped tanks now required, and it was unpopular from the Polish campaign onward. A black field cap was introduced in March 1940, and in January 1941 the beret was formally abolished — kept only for a few crews, such as those of the Czech-built Panzer 38(t).
