COBI C-47 Skytrain Berlin Airlift #5702
The Douglas C-47 Skytrain (English for "air train") also called the "Dakota" (DACoTA, or Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft) is one of the most popular World War II transport aircraft. Manufactured by the US, it was also used by the armies of other Allied countries. It was based on the design of the civilian version of the Douglas DC-3. It appeared on virtually all fronts of World War II and was in service long after the end of the war. Among other things, it was used to land paratroopers and tow gliders and also to transport supplies, ammunition and evacuate the wounded.
During the initial phase of the West Berlin blockade (1948 - 1949), the burden of maintaining the air bridge fell on the Douglas C-47 Skytrain (Dakota) aircraft. Later it was gradually supplemented and replaced by Douglas C-54 Skymaster and Avro York machines, as well as British Short Sunderland flying boats.
