The ship Voyager could have become

The Equinox was stranded in the Delta Quadrant by the same entity that stranded Voyager, in the same year, tens of thousands of light years from home. That is the entire point of her.

She was a smaller ship — a Nova-class science vessel, not built for a long voyage, with a smaller crew and far less capability. What happened to her crew is what the whole two-part story is about: they found a way home that required killing sentient creatures and converting their remains into fuel, and they took it.

Voyager's crew had faced versions of the same choice for five seasons and refused every time. The Equinox exists to ask whether that refusal was principle or luck — whether Janeway held the line because she was better, or because she had a bigger ship and more options.

Star Trek does not usually put that question on screen. It is why the episode is remembered, and why this small model is more interesting than another starship.

Five of her crew survived and were absorbed into Voyager's, where they spent the rest of the series being quietly not trusted.

The Nova class

Short-range science vessels, designed for planetary survey rather than deep exploration. The class shares design language with the Intrepid class — Voyager's own — which is deliberate: the two ships are meant to look related, and the similarity is what makes the comparison land.
