The most important building outside the walls
A medieval settlement could manage without most trades. It could not manage without a smith.
He made and repaired everything with metal in it: ploughshares, scythes, axes, nails, hinges, cooking pots, cart fittings, horseshoes, chains, locks. When a plough broke in spring, the harvest depended on how quickly he could mend it. There was no replacement to buy and nobody else who could do the work.
That gave him a standing few craftsmen had. In many places the smith was the second or third best-paid man in the village, held land, and was frequently exempt from labour dues because his time was worth more where he was.
And the forge was almost always sited at the edge of the settlement, or outside the walls entirely β not for status, but because it contained an open fire burning at welding heat, under a roof, surrounded by buildings made of timber and thatch. Towns that let smiths work in the centre tended to learn why not.
What a small module does for a castle
Towers and walls make a fortification. A workshop makes it a place people live. At 359 pieces this is one of the smaller modules in the range, and it is the one that changes the character of the display rather than its size.
In the BlueBrixx range
