This is a sealed starter deck box: 6 decks, 84 cards each. The set's starters are built for the Dragon, Lion and Mantis clans.

Starter decks in Legend of the Five Rings are not filler. Each one is a playable deck built around a single clan, with fixed cards and a Stronghold for that faction, plus cards carried over from earlier sets. For anyone entering the game — or picking a new clan — the starter is where you begin.

What set L5R apart from every other card game of its era was that the story was not fixed. Tournament results decided what actually happened in Rokugan: which clan won which war, who sat on the throne, who died. Players were writing the setting as they played it, and AEG printed the outcome onto the next set's cards.
