Upper Deck
2009/10 Upper Deck Black Diamond Hockey Hobby Box | 24 Packs | Opened Box, Sealed Packs
The 2009 draft class arrives in this set as Rookie Gems: John Tavares first overall, Victor Hedman second, Matt Duchene third. The card from this box that has aged best belongs to none of them — Erik Karlsson, taken fifteenth the year before, won the Norris Trophy in 2012 and again in 2015. Antti Niemi's rookie card is here too, printed in December 2009; six months later he was the goaltender who won the Stanley Cup with Chicago.
Each hobby box holds 24 packs of 5 cards. The base set is built in tiers: 90 single-diamond cards, 45 double, 45 triple and 42 quad, with the Rookie Gems rookies sitting in the triple and quad tiers.
Box break, guaranteed:
- 3 Triple Diamond rookie cards
- 1 Quad Diamond rookie card
- 2 Quad-Swatch jersey cards
- at least 1 numbered parallel
- 2 perimeter die-cut horizontal variations
The parallel ladder is unusually steep. Ruby runs to 100, Gold to 10, and Platinum to 1 — every card in the set exists as a genuine one-of-one. The jersey cards follow the same idea: Ruby to 50, Gold to 25, Onyx to 10, and an Onyx autograph version numbered to 5. Gemography signature cards fall 1:48 packs, so roughly every second box. The Hardware Heroes inserts are die-cut from PETG plastic rather than card stock, numbered to 100 and falling two per case.
