The turret rotates and lifts off, the barrel moves, the multi-link tracks work, and every hatch opens wide enough for a COBI figure. Tank ammunition stows inside, and a brick Maybach HL 230 engine sits under the service hatch or displays alongside. The nameplate carries The Tank Museum logo.

Compared with the earlier edition, set 2588, COBI has redesigned the tracks to follow the shape of the Tiger's real links more closely, added a new antenna, revised the structure in a number of smaller places and reworked the camouflage to sit closer to the original. All markings are printed onto the blocks.

Two sets of tracks

The Tiger I ran on combat tracks 725 mm wide. That width spread a 57-tonne tank over soft ground, and it also made the tank too wide for the railway loading gauge.

So every rail journey began with the running gear being taken apart. The crew removed the outer row of road wheels on each side, took off the combat tracks and fitted narrow 520 mm transport tracks; at the destination the whole process ran in reverse. A practised crew could change tracks in about twenty minutes. The transport tracks stayed with the railway wagons rather than the tank, and they were painted green for the Tiger I and red for the Tiger II, so that a unit ordering wagons received the right set.

Later Tigers with steel road wheels sat their wheels closer to the hull and no longer needed the outer row removed, though the track change remained.

In the COBI range

Set 2588 is the earlier edition of this model. Tiger 131 also exists at 1:35 as set 3123, at 1:48 as sets 2710 and 2734, and at 1:72 as set 3095. At the same 1:28 scale, set 2587 is the late Tiger I Ausf. E and set 2582 the Elefant.

Specifications

Pieces: 1,299 · Scale: 1:28 · Also included: removable Maybach engine, ammunition, nameplate
Model dimensions: 31.5 × 13 × 13.5 cm (12.4 × 5.1 × 5.3 in)
