It was not built as a standard fighter at all. It left North American Aviation's plant in Dallas in 1944 as an F-6K, a photo-reconnaissance version with two K-24 cameras mounted in the rear fuselage, one pointing straight down and one to the side.

Dallas-built Mustangs also differed in a detail most people never notice: they flew with an 11-foot Aeroproducts propeller instead of the Hamilton Standard propeller of the Inglewood-built P-51Ds. Delivered to the Army Air Forces with the serial number 44-12840, the aircraft has no reliable record of wartime use. In 1946 it was handed to the Civil Air Patrol, then passed through private owners and a long restoration in the 1980s, which is when it received its civil registration, N51EW. Cruise bought it in 2001 and flies it himself.

In the COBI range

Set 5847 is the earlier edition of this Top Gun Mustang with the same piece count, and set 5846 is the large version at 1:32 with a pilot figure and display stand. Set 5860 is the P-51D in wartime markings.

Specifications

Pieces: 150 · Official Top Gun: Maverick license
